personal statement FINISHED

i have successfully finished my p.s

i had a slight few problem getting started but after many re writes i finally finished and approved .

At university I wish to continue studying my passion for graphic design. This is the best course for me to pursue a career for in the future. With this choice I believe my ambitions will be achieved by continuing my education to the highest level possible. Whilst at university I would like to learn more about using materials and print, photography and image manipulation. I think this will help give me opportunities to further my knowledge, helping to me understand what kind of artist I am.

Most of my life I have been fascinated by all verities of art and design direction, be it either, interactive design, way finding, photo montage, adobe software, print, promotional advertising and product design. my preferred personal direction that I wish to focus on would have to be communications: For instance, guerrilla and ambient advertising. From an early age I have been fascinated by promotional campaigns, how they execute their ideas, I also find interesting is how campaigns can relate to peoples religions, emotions, especially the psychology of color and typography.

I have been focusing on a graphic design career for the past four years and still adamant this is the right course for me. by successfully completing a BTEC national diploma (level 3) in art and design and obtaining a grade ‘C’ at GCSE in art, shows that I have been interested in art and design for many years. Now currently studying a foundation degree in the same subject; I have been so passionate and enjoying every minute of understanding client briefs and myself experimenting so I can become a successful designer.
I have found this course so far to be an amazing experience and beneficial, primarily to the opportunity of work with real life clients such as Mercedes Benz. The brief was asked of me was to help promote their new branch, which was opening in Manchester and being shown on their vehicles. The second life brief was a competition for an artist known as Anish Kapoor. The project was to create the promotional work, the art direction for the event, which was being held at the Manchester art gallery. Successfully I won the competition. Great experience because it gave me a chance to interact and to understand how to work from a real brief.

In my spare time I enjoy educating my knowledge as a designer by visiting exhibitions and art gallery’s also urban design stores. Whilst taking these trips I tend to find myself examining the execution of the work and what they are trying to say through their work. I look at all verities of work with an open mind and try to understand and explore the art directions. Also in my spare time I attended extra curricular activates with an Adobe authorized training center, concentrating on Photoshop and illustration. This benefited me greatly with my course and my independent work. The time spent learning all the software’s techniques, helped me to work on my time management and how to use the software correctly to my advantage. Other achieving moments are being a junior designer for a established company in Manchester called ‘Astra sign’ whilst working for this company I worked on projects for J.D Sports, The Metro link, Clintons cards, the Manchester Andale and Manchester city f.c. this was great working experience giving me a positive mindset to peruse my dream of becoming a designer. The other benefits whilst working as a junior designer was working with major high profile clients, this helped me to improve my organizational skill, communication skill and time management, helping me understand the pre press side of the company, type, pantones and layout. I challenged myself with a large project a swell for a nightclub in Manchester known as ‘Barcode’ I was asked to design the corporate logo the signage (internally and externally) for company. Due to my recognition I was approached by the promotion staff to work with them with their design team to promote and design more logos, posters/flyers campaigns, banners and tear drops to help promote the nights the club was hosting.

My foundation degree I am studying has enabled me to be more confident with myself. Pushing my ideas forward. Using my time to be freer to experiment and explore my ideas to my best potential. What I have learnt from education and work experience I feel that studying at a degree level is the next step/goal and would be a dream come true.

peter wythenshaw project

in the morning i shall be concentrating on the wythenshaw project, finding out information on how to promote the new campus of the manchester college.

questions ill need to ask:
  1. what the college have to offer
  2. schools in south manchester & what they are like
  3. social class / deprivation and social inductees
  4. who goes to the schools
  5. can we approach the school leavers in their environment
what i found out from this meeting that the area of the campus is the largest esate in greater manchester. and it has the worst education. what the college want is to make sure this new build give the community a boost to rehabilitating itself. they want to strongly promote to young school leavers and make sure the go into education that is 'right on there door step'

  1. what is wythenshaw like
  2. what are the schools like
  3. what are the youths like
  4. what do they like (hobbies & educational)

BREAK UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS

whytheshaw campuse meeting

for the brief i went to the wythenshaw campus grounds and was shown casually. we then sat down and sat down and discussed what the client want from us. What was discussed was that the campus is not known to the public and in their case school leavers. they want us to create a add campaign to attract school  leaver to come to there college.
  • brand new building
  • eco friendly
  • not enough student
  • best technology
  • variety of course to pick
things to look at
  • add campaigns for education
  • target market (school leavers)
  • market competition
in a few week time we shall meet for a second meeting to discuss my ideas and see if they wish to push forward with my designs

to day i wrote out a online application for UCAS.COM. and in the proses of going through with procedures

i do wish to continue my studies around the manchester region. for instance salford unversity, bradford, bolton, liverpool, stockport so i will be contacting UCAS and applying for a place on there course i wish to study.

PROGRESSION/INDUSTRY/ PONTENIAL PORTFOLIO PIECES

today we presented to the class a summary of what we want from this year. be it work placements and what company want to see from young creative people, or actually looking for a creative job in the industry, so how should i be portraying myself in my portfolio.

im going to be looking at industry contacts and find out what is required of me to find a job, i would like to work for companies like 'Dirt Box Design'. the reason i love this company is because they design for promotional events mainly night events. i think i could be good at making this a career

experimenting with typography

part of todays lesson was to :

  • draw onto three dimension graph paper and designer our own type face
  • scan our work when satisfied
  • computer generate our work
this is a great way to experiment in the morning. the design i created was made randomly, if it was not for the paper to be honest, it was great fun and woke me up creatively for the day
THANKS

MARK BROWN

04.10.2011

GUEST SPEAKER

Mark Brown is a graphic designer. he took some time out of his day to visit us and show the pupil his portfolio work. b.c was lecturing on his life after his Degree. showing all his work, working as a graphic designer, also showing us what to expect and the level the work was required to be as a professional.
I found this guest speaker to be very beneficial.

The group then asked him question on his work he brought.
Asking questions LIKE :

  • why he choose a specific layout
  • how his target market works with his images
  • how much does he charge per design
  • what has he learnt being a designer after finishing his degree
  • how he found the work

LAUNCH OF WHYTHENSHAW BRIEF

28.10.2011

This morning i was de-briefed what my new assignment shall be. we had had the choose of two project to look from

  1. wythenshaw campus
  2. roses design competition
after looking a both brief. i choose (in my opinion to be the most interesting) the wythenshaw brief. the reason i choose to work with the manchester college, was that i can work will a live competition and with live clients.

what i have to do.
  • research where the college is
  • the area of wythenshaw
  • previous add campaigns
  • other colleges around manchester
  • what benefits wythenshaw has in contrast to others.

MCDONNALDS

the class as a whole, was given individual, original companies to re-brand.

we looked at
  • target market
  • target audience
  • the companies branding
  • logos
  • products & packaging
  • typography/colour psychology
From my research i had gathered. i started to mock up some new logos for the company to help give a different image. this was not very successful because the company given to me was non other than mcdonnalds. the fast food brand is one of the most successful and simplistic brand all around the world. but did help me understand how powerful branding a product can be.

layout project "the british library"

12.10.1011

I was given a task to to re-fresh the british library poster. i had to research a variety of poster designs, to help me with my layout and proportions. this was a great learning curve because it helped me understand that perfection and position is 'key' to a successful poster. because the poster had a large amount of text, it was very complicated to figure out where to place and what size this the type should be, and how easy it would be to read.
